Hal's Hope recap
A Quality Win on a Clear
Road
by
Richard Coreno, Sporting
News |
|

Greg
Barowksi
Quality Road
took
advantage of
a scrum at
the start by
a trio of
racers to
easily win
the $100,000
Grade III
Hal’s Hope
Stakes for
older horses
on Sunday at
Gulfstream
Park Racing
& Casino in
front of an
opening day
crowd of
more than
9,000.
The champion
returned to
the dirt
track in
Hallandale
Beach,
Florida,
which suited
him
perfectly in
2009 -
winning the
Fountain of
Youth Stakes
and Florida
Derby - for
a
wire-to-wire
romp by
nearly three
lengths in
the one-turn
mile. With
John
Velazquez
aboard, the
heavy
wagering
favorite
paid a scant
$2.80 for
every $2 win
ticket and
banked
$60,000 for
getting a
photograph
taken in the
winner’s
circle.
Jockey Eddie
Castro had
You and I
Forever
eying an
upset into
the stretch,
but gave way
as Quality
Road powered
away and
held off
Congressional
Page for
second
place.
Harlem
Rocker
placed
fourth after
chasing the
pace and
tiring, with
the
remaining
finishing
slots being
occupied by
Helsinki, Le
Grand Cru,
Colonial
Causeway,
Spin Master
and Suyeta.
Harlem
Rocker, Le
Grand Cru
and Suyeta
bumped into
each other
as the
starting
gates sprang
open at 4:43
p.m. for the
main event -
on a “fast”
track that
benefited
runners who
could power
to the front
in the early
strides -
with the
latter
unable to
recover and
being outrun
throughout.
Jockey Jose
Lezcano
rushed up Le
Grand Cru to
challenge
Quality
Road, You
and I
Forever and
Spin Master
as the
opening
quarter-mile
was clocked
in a
pedestrian
25.15
seconds.
After a
half-mile in
48.31
seconds,
Harlem
Rocker was
urged by
jockey Eibar
Coa to get
into the
mix.
After
stopping the
time at
1:12.03 at
the
three-quarter-mile
mark, the
Todd
Pletcher-trainee
bid ado to
the pursuers
and was
ridden under
the wire in
1:36.33.
Owned and
bred by
Edward P.
Evans, the
son of
Elusive
Quality -
age four -
has won five
races in
eight
lifetime
starts,
while
banking
$1,032,830.
Nearly
$668,000 has
been
captured at
Gulfstream
Park from a
record of
three wins
and one
second place
finish.
Importantly,
the
Virginia-bred
showed
maturity
while
loading into
the starting
gate. The
past
feistiness
has caused a
number of
problems and
culminated
with
suffering
lacerations
to his limbs
in a
starting
gate
accident
which made
him a late
scratch out
of the
November 7
Breeders’
Cup Classic
at Santa
Anita Park’s
Oak Tree
Racing Meet.
Quality Road
has punched
a ticket for
the February
6 Donn
Handicap, a
Grade I
event for
older horses
that is
contested on
the dirt at
1 1/8 miles
for a
guaranteed
purse of
$500,000.
The most
impressive
of the
remaining
eight was
You and I
Forever, who
was
outclassed
in the
November 27
Grade II
Clark
Handicap at
Churchill
Downs -
placing
11th, nearly
11 lengths
behind the
winner,
Blame, over
the 1 1/8
miles on the
dirt surface
- but was
progressing
nicely at
nearby
Calder
Casino &
Race Course,
with the
final timed
workout
being a
bullet four
furlongs of
48.20
seconds on
December 28.
The Martin
Wolfson-trainee
should be a
starter in
the Donn.
Jockey
Carlos
Marquez,
Jr., had
Congressional
Page
charging at
the end and
that may be
enough for
the gelding,
who has been
based on the
East Coast,
to hang
around in
the sun and
train for
the Donn.
Owned by R.
Larry
Johnson, the
son of
Orientate -
who had six
races at age
four before
the Hal’s
Hope - was
probably
monitoring
weather
reports
while
recently
training at
the Palm
Meadows
Training
Center in
Boynton
Beach,
Florida.
Before a
number of
illnesses
derailed
Harlem
Rocker for
nearly a
year, the
son of Macho
Uno was
being
pointed to
the 2009
Donn. Owned
by Stronach
Stables and
trained by
Pletcher,
the
grey/roan
should be on
the trail
for a
possible
rematch with
Quality
Road. But
the
challenge in
the next
race better
be in the
closing
strides and
not in the
opening
yards. |

Harlem Rocker is
entered for his return on
Saturday, November 14, at Churchill
Downs.
The race is an Allowance Optional
Claiming $100K at 7 furlongs, and he
is not running for a tag. The race
will not be a walkover, but he does
have somewhat of a weight advantage,
by carrying 120 lbs. High weight is
124 and has been assigned to Cosmic,
Agastache, and King of the Roxy
(also running for Todd Pletcher).
HR has been assigned post position 1
and will be ridden by John
Velazquez. This will be the
first time that he has not been
ridden by Eibar Coa (who has mounts
scheduled at Calder on that day).
It is a good field of horses and we
will be hoping for a good finish for
him!
RESULTS
-
Harlem
Rocker has returned to Florida and
turned in his first recorded
work at Palm Meadows
on 11/29/09.
-
If all
goes well, the Hal's Hope on 1/3/10,
opening day at Gulfstream, is Harlem
Rocker's target return to stakes
competion.
-
November 9, 2009
- HR was sent today, by plane, from
Belmont Park to Churchill Downs in
anticipation of this weekend's race for
him there. It is reported that he
has filled out nicely and is acquiring
more of a stallion attitude.
-
September 26,
2009 - Harlem Rocker returns to the work
tab. In his first recorded
work since the layoff in January of
2009, he breezes 3F over the dirt at
Belmont Park in 37.10. The work
was 7/10 over the fast track.
-
June 15, 2009 -
HR is scheduled to leave the farm this
week and return to trainer Todd Pletcher's Belmont barn. If all
goes as planned, he should resume
breezing in the latter part of July and
be pointed for a race toward the end of
Saratoga or beginning of Belmont
meeting.
-
May 13, 2009 -
Harlem Rocker is now jogging at Adena
Springs South.
-
April 2009
update -
HR was sent to the farm after
spiking a temp while prepping for the
Donn Handicap. After further
setbacks, and treatment for colic, no
date has been established for a return
to training. Future racing plans will
formulate after his return to training.
A recent report from the farm now
indicates that "he has gained quite a
lot of weight and is strutting his stuff
in the paddock all of the time!"
-
Join the
Friends of Harlem Rocker on facebook.
Harlem Rocker has been
nominated to both the Dubai World Cup
and the Godolphin Mile.
Both races are run on March 28 at Nad Al
Sheba in Dubai.
-
3/28/09 Dubai World Cup, $6 million,
Group 1, 1
1/4 mile
-
Godolphin Mile, $1
million, Group 2, 1 mile.
-
Nominations closed January 7, 2009.
Notification of field selection will be
forwarded to connections in early
February 2009.
-
Harlem
Rocker is out of the Donn Handicap.
A temperature
forced him to miss a few days of
training so he will now be pointed to
the GII Gulfstream Park Handicap on
March 14 at the distance of 1 mile.
There he will face a possible rematch
with Tale of Ekati who will also run in
the G2 Richter Scale on 2/14. Tale
of Ekati is alternately possible for the
Godolphin Mile at Nad Al Sheeba on March
28. Smooth Air is also possible
for the Gulfstream Park H.

Hal's Hope coverage
One Quality Rock Show
by
Richard Coreno, Sporting
News |
|
It doesn’t
get any
better for
an
opening-day
main event
at
Gulfstream
Park Racing
& Casino, as
the $100,000
Grade III
Hal’s Hope
Stakes on
Sunday
features a
pair of
racers
trained by
Todd
Pletcher who
are gearing
up for huge
2010
campaigns
after health
problems
kept them on
the backside
for some
time.
Harlem
Rocker was
derailed for
nearly one
year due to
a variety of
ailments,
while
Quality Road
suffered
lacerations
to his limbs
in a
starting
gate
accident
which made
him a late
scratch out
of the
November 7
Breeders’
Cup Classic
at Santa
Anita Park’s
Oak Tree
Racing Meet.
The duo will
be facing
seven
quality
opponents in
the one-turn
mile on the
dirt surface
in
Hallandale,
Florida. It
is the
eighth of
nine races,
with post
time slated
for 4:43
p.m.
Jockey Eibar
Coa will be
aboard
Harlem
Rocker, age
five, who
missed
nearly all
of 2009 due
to a number
of health
issues that
halted even
light
training for
a number of
months. The
2008 winner
of the
Prince of
Wales Stakes
- the second
gem in
Canada’s
Triple Crown
- made a
solid return
to the races
on November
14 with a
runner-up
finish in a
$100,000
optional
claiming
event at
Churchill
Downs.
The prior
race on
November 29,
2008, was
marred by a
controversial
steward’s
decision
that
snatched
victory from
the son of
Macho Uno in
the Grade I
Hill ‘n’
Dale Cigar
Mile at
Aqueduct
Racetrack in
South Ozone
Park, New
York. After
a lengthy
inquiry, it
was
determined
that Harlem
Rocker
interfered
with Tale of
Ekati in the
deep
stretch. The
pair
switched
spots in the
final
results as
many in the
crowd jeered
the
decision.
The Stronach
Stables
runner was
being
pointed to a
winter 2009
campaign at
Gulfstream
Park, but
instead
piled up
bills
through
treatments
at the
veterinarian’s
office.
Quality Road
was last
seen
striding
away from
the starting
gate in the
prestigious
Breeders’
Cup race
after a
serious of
events;
refusing to
load,
finally led
into the
gate by
assistant
starter’s
while being
blindfolded,
but quickly
rearing up
and breaking
through the
front
barrier of
the gate.
The son of
Elusive
Quality had
to be vanned
coast-to-coast
- after a
stopover at
Churchill
Downs - due
to refusing
to be loaded
into a plane
bound for
New York
days after
the starting
gate woes.
The 2009
winner of
the Florida
Derby at
Gulfstream
Park was
then pointed
to the
November 28
Cigar Mile,
but
ultimately
not entered.
Owned by
Edward P.
Evans, the
four-year-old
has been
working
forwardly in
December
while
clocking
times at the
Palm Meadows
Training
Center in
Boynton
Beach,
Florida.
Jockey John
Velazquez
will have
one-half of
the race won
if he can
get the colt
to settle
down before
stepping
into the
starting
gate.
The Hal’s
Hope is
shaping up
to be a
classic
stretch
duel, with
Quality Road
trying to
win from the
front of the
pack and
Harlem
Rocker
cranking
into gear
about midway
through the
turn.
Legitimate
splits will
be clocked
by
five-year-old
Le Grand
Cru, who
should
explode into
the lead
under jockey
Jose Lezcano,
as Quality
Road sits
comfortably
in second
and the
Richard
Dutrow-trained
Helsinki
waiting to
pounce at
mid-pack
with jockey
Julien
Leparoux
willing to
sit chilly.
The fans
won’t be in
their seats
in the drive
to the
winner‘s
circle, as
Harlem
Rocker
inches by
Quality Road
in the final
yards for
the win,
with a game
Le Grand Cru
repelling
the
six-year-old
Helsinki for
third. The
other racers
slated to
compete are
You and I
Forever,
Colonial
Causeway,
Suyeta, Spin
Master and
Congressional
Page.
The $60,000
check for
the winner
will be a
nice way to
start the
new year,
but don’t be
surprised if
a handful of
contenders
emerge out
of the race
for a 2010
Eclipse
Award in the
categories
of Horse of
the Year and
Older Male
Horse. |
